A miscarriage can lead a mother to grief, anxiety, and other trauma symptoms. There are some people who misunderstand the mourning period after a miscarriage, while some women mourn their lost baby for longer than people expect. In this case, the family's ability to provide the right support will be crucial.
In this episode of All Together: The Family Science Insights Podcast, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Michelle Juarez, a licensed professional counselor (LPC). She specializes in infertility, reproductive loss, and third-party reproduction. As well as working with individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds, she works with LGBTQ community.
Michelle starts this episode with her perception of family in today’s society with her experience as a pregnancy counselor, some medical explanations about the types and causes of pregnancy loss, and the biggest misconception about miscarriage. Entering the main topic, Michelle describes how family can provide support for a pregnancy loss, what to say, and what not to mention to a family member who experiences a pregnancy loss.

For some of us, our siblings are our first playmates. On top of that, they also play a very crucial role in instilling each other’s social qualities. So much so that being estranged from our siblings can give us a deep sense of loss and can negatively impact our ability to connect with others in our growing-up years.
In this episode of All Together: Family Science Insights Podcast, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Fern Schumer Chapman, a former journalist and an author of the book “Brothers, Sisters, Strangers: Sibling Estrangement and the Road to Reconciliation”.
Fern shares her perception of how the family is defined in this modern society, the core value of listening and understanding each other’s experiences, and how it affects relationships with our siblings. She also talks about the practices she used to reconcile with her only brother, from whom she has been estranged for the majority of her adult life.

Arguments about money, between family members, are the second highest cause of divorce in the US. The focus on oneself and the inability to communicate with their partner in life concerning money, are two of the main causes of such a situation.
In this episode of All Together: The Family Science Insights Podcast, host Dina Sargeant is joined by E. Jeffrey Hill, a professor of Family Life at Brigham Young University who teaches classes in family finance to about 1200 students per year, and an author of “Fundamentals of Family Finance: Living Joyfully within your Means”.
He shared some main principles of successful family finance and highlighted that trust is one of them. We also asked Jeffrey about how the pandemic changed family finances in society and how important it is to have conversations about money in a family — which he answered by hundreds over ten scales along with the reasons behind them.

Marriage preparation is not just about preparing the wedding party and the guest list. We carry a whole lot of expectations and assumptions into a marriage.
In this episode of All Together: The Family Science Insights Podcast, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Linda Bloom, a psychotherapist and marriage counselor who holds relationship workshops and is also the co-author of four books including the best-selling "101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Got Married".
In this podcast, Linda shared her perceptions about how marriage preparation should be understood by couples before they decide to tie the knot, how marriage is not just about loving each other but also discussing everything that you have in mind with your partner, and how commitment is supposed to be defined instead of being 'locked up in a cell' like most people think it is.
