When it comes to sibling relationships—sibling rivalry, jealousy, and empathy can take place. When navigating a sibling relationship alongside the challenges of disability, it may occasionally impact the dynamic, posing long-term challenges.
In today’s show, Dina is joined by Dr. Carolyn Shivers, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Niagara University, NY. Shivers has been a part of multiple research papers, many addressing the dynamics in a sibling relationship with a disabled sibling. Dina and Dr. Shivers talk about the implications this can have on the sibling dynamic, including jealousy and preferential treatment. Tune in to find out how impactful it is in the long run, and how you can provide emotional support to your teenagers.

With children off school and families gathering together, there can be a number of challenges families face on their usual routine. Everyone in close quarters, different celebratory traditions and cultures amongst the family.
In today's episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Sarah Lee, clinical psychologist and PhD candidate. Dina and Sarah discuss the various dynamics within a family and how culture can change the ways in which parents approach parenting. Both share their own personal journey to finding their own autonomy outside family expectations and cultural practices, however negative that may seem to other family members.
Especially during the holiday season, families all in one place with so many different traditions and practices, Sarah shares some ways to keep the peace amongst all family members while also creating new traditions for families to enjoy. I know what you’re thinking: How do art and communication go together? Family relationships can be conflicting, nurturing, or safe for each member. Sometimes individuals also perceive those relationships differently.
In today's episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Su Mei Tan, founder of Art Tearapy and an art therapist based in Melbourne. While she began her journey by building houses in third-world countries, she discovered her passion for helping children through art. This led to her exploration of art therapy, culminating in the creation of Art Tearapy. Art Tearapy focuses on using the creative mind to understand and improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Dina and Su Mei discuss the various dynamics within a family and how these dynamics can either facilitate communication or create resistance to healthy communication patterns. They share observations on how people communicate, including how certain patterns can foster negative relationships among family members. Su Mei also explores how art therapy can be utilized for team-building exercises involving the entire family, encompassing both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Before the journey of marriage even begins, many individuals grapple with the apprehension of settling down after their first marriage. Prenup seems to act as a trigger for a lot of people, seen as a harbinger of the worst rather than the better.
In today's episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Dr. Henry Kha, a Senior Lecturer of Law at Macquarie University. With primary research interests in family law and history, Dr. Henry delves into the intricacies of family law, examining it from both a legal historical and contemporary perspectives. While societal norms have evolved, the legal landscape seems to lag behind.
Dina and Dr. Henry explore the role that prenuptial agreements play in shaping modern marriages, especially in second marriages, and discuss how this conversation influences the dynamics between individuals.

Every family has different ways they have learned to communicate. This particular pattern impacts how we speak to each other, how we solve problems that occur, and the ways in which we care for each other.
In this episode of "All Together: The Family Science Insights Podcast," host Dina Sargeant is joined by Dr Jennifer L. Bevan, a professor in the School of Communication at Chapman University in California, United States. Her research interests focus upon the negotiation of difficult relational interactions, such as ongoing conflict, jealousy, family caregiving, chronic illness, as well as related psychological and physical health correlates of these experiences. She has published more than 75 scholarly communication books, articles, and book chapters appearing in such journals as Human Communication Research, Communication Research, Social Science and Medicine, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. She was recognized in 2009 and 2016 as one of the most prolific and central scholars in the field of communication and received multiple book awards for her 2013 book The Communication of Jealousy (Peter Lang Press).
Dina and Dr. Jennifer delve into a deeper understanding of caregiving, widening the conversation to include not only elderly care but also the care for family members with disabilities. Dr. Jennifer also shares her valuable viewpoints, combining the communication patterns we observe and create in our families, which can significantly affect our relationships with those whom we take care of. Communication challenges that can either be taken the wrong way or get heated very quickly in many families are explored, and Dr. Jennifer offers practical advice for reducing potential conflicts and arguments that may arise.
