Michael Riley: How to Solve Our Family Trauma After Natural Disasters | All Together #22
After a natural disaster, the emotional aftermath can be devastating, leaving long-lasting scars on survivors, especially those who have lost loved ones or have been physically injured. These emotional wounds can be difficult to heal and may require significant time and effort to rebuild their lives.
In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Michael Riley, an experienced accredited Counsellor, Couples Therapist, licensed Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP), Nationally Accredited Mediator, Clinical Supervisor, Coach, Group-Work Facilitator, Juvenile Justice DFV Consultant & Conference Convenor, Men's Behaviour Change Specialist, DCJ Family Group Conference Mediator, and Education Consultant. Over the past 20 years, he has worked with NSW Corrections, Relationships Australia, Juvenile Justice, Family and Community Services, and private organizations. His focus is primarily on learned optimism to deal with grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and suicide prevention.
During the episode, Michael emphasizes the importance of addressing the emotional trauma and potential long-term effects of natural disasters on families. He highlights that each individual's experience is unique, and therapists should avoid judging or comparing clients. He also recommends working with people in a group rather than individually after natural disasters, which can create a support mechanism for each other once external support leaves.
